1. Hell Girl

Synopsis:
"Hell Girl" follows a girl named Ai Enma and her followers as they form contracts to enact revenge and send people directly to hell.
However, these contracts come at a price (for both parties)...

Content warnings:
Animal death, animal abuse, domestic violence, domestic abuse, stalking, pedophilia, sexual assault, rape, drugging, bullying, suicide, manipulation, blood, gore, murder, body horror

Comments:
Hell girl was my first to watch while I was on my horror anime binge! It was such a ride, and I enjoyed it greatly. The main characters are all so fun and they are dear to my heart (especially Ichimokuren). It is also very fun seeing bad people get what they deserve (although not all that are sent to hell are bad people).

2. Alien Nine

Synopsis:
Alien Nine is about a group of girls who become apart of the school's "Alien party" and have to protect their school from aliens, while having to take care of their own assigned "Borgs" (Little aliens that feed off of and protect them).

Content warnings:
Alien blood and gore, blood

Comments:
The anime only has four episodes and it was really an experience. The animation and art style are so good and I enjoyed this anime a lot for it being so short. (There is a manga but,, I haven't read it)

3. Mononoke

Synopsis:
Mononoke is about a medicine seller who hunts "mononoke". Mononoke spawn from human feelings, so in order to exorcise them he must find out their "truth" and "reason" along with the mononoke's true form. Each episode goes into the stories of the people involved, and the negative feelings which the mononoke attach to.

Content warnings:
Pregnancy, body horror, incest, domestic abuse, hanging, blood, murder, racism (in a few character designs)

Comments:
This. show. is. INCREDIBLE. The animation is so unique, the colors are so good, and the stories told were so much fun to watch through. It's only twelve episodes long but it was such an enjoyment and leaves me wanting more,, There is a manga, which you should probably read before getting to the anime, or alternatively you can watch the manga animated in episodes 9-11 of Ayakashi: Japanese Classic Horror/Samurai Horror Tales. (The medicine seller first makes his animated appearance in the Ayakshi show, Mononoke is a spinoff.)

4. Mushishi

Synopsis:
Mushishi follows the experiences of a traveling medicine seller and mushi-shi (someone who specializes in the things known as "mushi") by the name of Ginko. He cannot stay in one place for too long so he travels around helping people who are suffering because of them.

Content warnings:
Pregnancy, drugging, suicide, murder

Comments:
Mushishi is absolutely beautiful, I love its art and animation so so much. The show brings me so much comfort, it's so calming. Even with the occasional dark topic mentioned/shown it's still such a serene show and I have fallen asleep to it multiple times. The ambiance and music is so nice and easy to relax to.
Also, both openings are so nice to listen to,,
Honestly, this anime is one of my all-time favorites. I could not recommend it enough to those who enjoy less action-packed stuff.
(I'm so fond of it, I have all ten volumes of the manga irl! I blew all my money on it and don't regret a thing.)

4. Another

Synopsis:
Keichi Sakakibara is student who recently transfered into Yomiyama North Middle School, class 3-3. He very quickly realizes that there is something off about this class when he meets a strange girl named Mei Misaki, who is ignored by the rest of his class. Soon class 3-3 experiences a series of gruesome and horrific deaths of the people around them and Keichi wishes to get to bottom of it all.

Content warnings:
Blood, gore, suicide, murder, nudity (LOTS of blood and gore, it's that kind of show.)

Comments:
Another (pun unintended) show I watched on my horror binge (..a lot of these are, actually.) and it was really... Fun. There's a lot of blood, gore, and death and it was kinda a breath of fresh air from the more.. calm horror anime. Sometimes you feel like you need more gore in your horror phase and this definitely has it!! jhgfdghj,,,,, It's not a very long series but it's good. The manga goes into more depth, as far as I've read (which isn't that far tbh).

5. Girls' Last Tour

Synopsis:
Two girls, Chito and Yuuri, are traveling around and scavenging for food and other supplies through land affected by an unknown apocalypse. As they move foward they encounter objects of the past and other survivors, slowly putting together what said apocalypse was.

Content warnings:
Mild flashing, being eaten alive(?)

Comments:
This anime is so pretty and the main characters are so fun,, There's also a little feeling of near complete loneliness looming over the entire thing, as most people around are gone. Despite how sad the world is, the two find comfort in eachother and the anime has it's sweet moments. I also quite enjoy "girls surviving an apocalypse" .. it's a fun concept.
The manga gives you a full ending and it's pretty sad/bittersweet from what I've heard, but the series is really great overall.

6. School-live!

Synopsis:
A group of girls apart of the "School-living club" live out their days at school and work together to overcome the problems they encounter there.
Truth be told, they are the survivors of a zombie apocalypse and have barricaded themselves within their school for shelter. The anime shows them trying to survive and collect resources, while Yuki struggles to comprehend the horrors she has witnessed.

Content warnings:
Blood

Comments:
..Speaking of girls surviving an apocalypse! This show is really fun and the horror of Yuki's situation is great to watch. It's not the zombies themselves that are scary, it's the effect they have on the girls. There are its sad moments, both in the anime and manga, and it's an experience I really enjoyed. The anime ends in a postive light, though.

7. Paranoia Agent

Synopsis:
A series of attacks have been caused by someone the people call Shounen Bat (or Lil' Slugger). Two detectives have taken up the case and investigate the identity and truth of the culprit.

Content warnings:
Blood, suicide, animal/pet death, drugs, pedophilia, sexual abuse, ableism, pregnancy

Comments:
Directed by Satoshi Kon, this anime may be a little bizzare and confusing to those who may not know his work (though I believe Paprika to be much more "abstract" and strange). The music is very unique (as they are in most of his works) and the plot is a collection of the stories of Lil' Slugger's victims.
That said, I love this show and Satoshi's work. The intro had me hooked immediately, and I was not disappointed.
For dark stuff more on the bizzare side, this is a really good show. (If you really want to see how strange Satoshi Kon's stuff can get, watch Paprika. It's very bright and confusing and it's my favorite movie ever.)
(I've also seen Perfect Blue and Tokyo Godfathers, neither are as confusing. Tokyo Godfathers is pretty "normal", actually. Perfect Blue is "abtract" but really dark, both visually and in theme.)

8. Parasyte ~The Maxim~

Synopsis:
A boy named Shinichi Izumi has his arm possesed by a parasite-like creature named "Migi" and is forced to live symbiotically with it. Due to the way Migi's kind functions, it becomes easy for other parasites to sense their presence. Shinichi and Migi must fight together to protect their lives from both the parasites and humans.

Content warnings:
Blood, gore, body horror, animal abuse, cannibalism, pregnancy

Comments:
I really enjoyed Parasyte!! It reminds me a lot of the Boogiepop series (for more reasons than one!), and Migi's character is really interesting. Watching Shinichi change and grow personality-wise was really fun, to say the least.

9. Boogiepop Phantom/Boogiepop and Others

Synopsis:
It is rumored that a being called "Boogiepop" will appear and involve themselves in unexplainable incidents happening around the city. The show follows the many characters who unfortunately fall vitcim to or are involved in such events, who end up in contact with Boogiepop.

Content warnings:
Blood, sexual assault, sexual harassment, bugs (like the kinds most would be afraid of), drugs, pedophilia, vomit, flashing, loud music

Comments:
Okay, so most of those content warnings strictly apply to the original Boogiepop Phantom anime that came out in 2000.
I should also mention that "Boogiepop Phantom" and "Boogiepop and Others" are very different, and you should probably watch Boogiepop Phantom first, like I did. It may not make any sense until you see Boogiepop and Others, though (that's when everything clicked for me, at least).
Onto my actual opinion on this, I loved it! I enjoyed Boogiepop and Others quite a bit. The intertwining stories are all such experiences and the art and animation add to it. Scarecrow and Mo Murder's stories stick with me the most, I think. I think about them a lot when thinking about the show. It's crazy to think how they interact with Nagi and how similar their actions ended up being. Without spoiling anything, they both impacted her greatly and she is clueless to exactly how much they've affected her.

10. Death Parade

Synopsis:
Decim is a bartender and arbiter for the dead. His job is to determine where souls are sent after death. In order to do this, souls are made to play a game in order to draw out their "true nature". Death Parade focuses on the stories of these souls (alongside the story of Decim and his assistant Chiyuki).

Content warnings:
Blood, gore, domestic abuse, stalking, rape, murder, pregnancy, suicide, flashing, nudity, vomit

Comments:
This anime is so pretty and the plot is incredible!!! This is another one of those "we'll give you some characters and tell you their sad stories and now you have to watch them deal with their emotions" show.. I enjoy these a lot, oops. /lh
I would also recoomend you watch the start of the series, an animated short called Death Billards. It's 25 minutes of extra content that I'd reccomend watching after finishing the show. I think it's more exciting/enjoyable when you've seen it!
Also, fun fact about some of the english VAs! Chiyuki is voiced by Jamie Marchi, who plays Junko Enoshima in Danganronpa 3. Takashi is voiced by Eric Vale, who plays anime Phoenix Wright (Eric Vale actually plays Kentaro in Boogiepop and Others as well). Shimada is voiced by Todd Haberkorn who also voices Razor from Genshin Impact. And the young man in Death Billards is voiced by Yuichi Nakamura, who voices Karamatsu Matsuno!

11. Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Synopsis:
Madoka Kaname is approached by a creature named Kyubey who offers to grant her any wish in exchange for her becoming a magical girl and fighting beings called "witches". She soon finds herself involved with other magical girls and learns the truth behind the contracts formed and the reality of being a magical girl.

Content warnings:
Blood, flashing, suicide, murder

Comments:
Seeing Gekidan Inu Curry's animations for the witches had me absolutely fall in love with this show. The strange stop-motion in comparison to the rest of the anime was such a cool thing to see. I'm kinda very in love with the group's art and animation in general, but Madoka Magica introduced me to them.
Despite the clashing styles I really think it works well with the dark tone of the anime.

12. Death Note

Synopsis:
Light Yagami finds himself in the possesion of a "death note". It's written that when the name of a person is written in the book, they will be killed. After testing the legitimacy, Light moves on to fighting for perfect world. With the power of the death note, he begins to target criminals and this attracts the attention of law enforcement.

Content warnings:
Blood, suicide, sexual assault, manipulation, murder

Comments:
Okay so, yes, this is a bit basic. But I truly believe this show is worth the praise and attention! I love watching characters get worse /hj
Light doing all this crazy shit to hide his identity as Kira was so exciting. Anime rarely makes me feel so on the edge of my seat like that.
Also, did you know there's a musical? It never released in English, unfortunately, however we have a concept album and it fucking slaps. I go insane everytime I listen to it.

13. Mob Psycho 100

Synopsis:
Shigeo Kageyama is a young but very powerful esper training under the not-so-powerful Reigen Arataka. Shigeo is strugging to fit in due to his powers, and he feels as though he lacks any real goals. Mob Psycho 100 shows him learning and growing as a person while struggling with issues caused by his powers.

Content warnings:
Blood, animal abuse, transmisogyny, bullying, flashing (like a TON)

Comments:
This show has a good balance of emotion filled scenes and the more light-hearted stuff. I find it a nice watch when I'm not in a good place mentally. The show goes into what it means to be a good person and those parts are really, really good. I highly recommend this one for that exact reason.

14. Neon Genesis Evangelion

Synopsis:
Shinji Ikari is forced into piloting a robot called an Evangelion and protecting Tokyo-3 from terrifying things called Angels. Despite how physically and emotionally taxing this task is, he continues to try and protect the people close to him.

Content warnings:
Blood, gore, sexual assalt, sex/sexual topics, flashing (like, so much of it), suicide, hanging, child abuse, child neglect, murder, nudity

Comments:
Evangelion is really emotional and often handles childhood trauma, it's popular and for good reason. The show gets pretty dark and I watched it during my horror phase.

15. Angel Beats!

Synopsis:
Yuzuru Otonashi wakes up in a high school without his memories. He eventually learns that this "high school" is a purgatory-like area for traumatized and troubled souls to go for them to process what is holding them back from moving on and being reincarnated. Without his memories, however, Otonashi cannot move on. Here he follows the souls in purgatory and helps them to reach peace.

Content warnings:
Suicide, child abuse, domestic abuse, blood, flashing

Comments:
Angel Beats is so... emotional. It's a special series to me. Each character has such a sad story and it made me cry watching them all come to terms with everything. The ending of the anime is bittersweet, and it for sure hurt me a ton. This is absolutely worth the watch if you're in the right headspace for it.

16. Cowboy Bebop

Synopsis:
A group of bounty hunters aboard the space ship Bebop are living payment to payment. Spike Spiegel tries his best to make a living while being haunted by his past. He eventually comes to find that he cannot run anymore, and has to face his old life head on.

Content warnings:
Blood, drugs, nudity, racism, flashing, body horror, medical abuse/malpractice, animal abuse

Comments:
Cowboy Bebop is so well animated, designed, produced... It's so pleasing on the eyes and the OST is so pleasing to the ears!!!! The political themes are really great too, it's really rare to find that kind of stuff in anime.
The movie, Knocking on Heaven's Door was very good as well. (Speaking of, it's reccomended you watch the movie between episode 25 and 26.)

Bonus!!!
Here's stuff I haven't finished watching yet but I'm really enjoying currently:

Code Geass

Fullmetal Alchemist

Magical Girl Site

I was stuck on Code Geass for a while because S2 got me really sad, but I've finally started it back up! I enjoy it a lot it's just. kinda tragic to watch jhgfghjk;;;
FMA is a long series so it's hard for me to say for sure whether or not I'll be able to finish it... However so far I'm really having fun with it! The art and animation is really good and the characters are so fun. I was hooked from the first episode, it'll definitely be put on this page if I ever get to finish it.
Magical Girl Site is another horror magical girl show. (can you tell I love horror) It's short and gets really dark really quick, I'm enjoying it a ton.
